Sent

Sent is a new media project that randomly combines words taken from every message I sent from my personal and work e-mail accounts in 2014. Some messages were sent when I was in the role of an artist, others were sent as a professor, a faculty colleague, a degree program coordinator, a search committee member, a husband, and a father.

Over 100,000 words were used in those outgoing messages and after all proper nouns and other problematic words were removed, the final word count was 47,743. While running, nine hundred words are randomly chosen to appear on screen in a typographic cloud. Periodically, one of forty sentence structures is randomly chosen and letters in the cloud move to make an original statement. As each statement’s letters return to the typographic cloud, their words are randomly replaced with others from the project’s lexicon.
