Symphonies

These drawings, generated with music, were commissioned by Forage Press, an online publication that “celebrates the union between audio and visual creativity.” Participating artists were asked to interpret a distinct form or piece of music and tell its story with visual imagery.

Building on generative processes I use for wind drawings, I created a new system based on music.  Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor was a natural choice for this project. It is one of my favorite pieces of music and if you ever hear it performed live, I promise you that your eyes will fill with tears in the fourth movement as the orchestra quickens its pace and the voices of the chorus rise above it.

Each of these drawings was generated during the playback of one of Beethoven's symphonies. If you are familiar with the music, you should be able to sense the differences between them. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is over twice as long as many of the others and as a result, its drawing is more dense. Its chorale gives Ninth its vibrant yellows. In Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, the deeper tones of its distinctive four-note motif give Fifth its deeper, red tone.
