interpreter for SP Weather Station, an interdisciplinary project based in New York, that collects weather data and organizes weather-related publications, events, and exhibitions while maintaining a rooftop weather station. SPWS interpreters work with weather data from one month and their invitation gave me a chance to return to the wind drawings I made in Massachusetts. SPWS did not collect wind data at a high enough frequency to enable me to produce drawings with enough detail so I set up my own equipment to collect wind speed and direction. The equipment I used in Massachusetts was somewhat crude so I invested in a new electronic wind vane that promised a high level of accuracy. The wind vane and anemometer fed data into a Basic Stamp microcontroller connected to a computer. Data was collected once a second for the entire month of June. Digital copies of these interpretations along with three prints were included in the SPWS portfolio. Five 20-inch prints drawings were produced for a show at ahn|vhs in Philadelphia. A review of the show by Roberta Fallon appeared in the Philadelphia Weekly. The first showing was during “Drawing Revisited” at the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art in Greensboro. Instruments installed on the roof fed wind data to a computer in the gallery where visitors could see a drawing rendered in real-time. Since the wind data is collected at a rate of once a second, the drawings seem to build slowly, but over time, each day's drawing takes a unique shape. I am currently working on new interpretations. I took some electronics and programming classes and built a simple apparatus to capture wind data with weather instruments and custom software written in Processing. For these drawings, a circle is plotted every second based on wind speed and direction. The faster the wind blows, the larger the circle and the greater the distance from the center. The circle colors alternate every hour between a color and white. Colors change throughout the day as the drawing adds and subtracts from itself. While cross-country skiing, I came across an oak leaf with its stem stuck in the snow. As the wind blew, the leaf spun and its edges made marks in the snow. Back home, I cut some plastic bottles into different shapes and tied each one to a stick in the snow. Left all day to blow in the wind, the plastic cut into the snow making a record of the day’s wind conditions. Wanting a more permanent record, I constructed an apparatus to suspend a pen outfitted with sails over paper. I participated in the group exhibition, “Drawing Revisited” at the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art. In addition to showing two large wind drawings based on data collected in New York, I presented a live drawing using weather instruments mounted to the roof of the building. For each day of the exhibition, the gallery staff printed a drawing of the previous day’s winds and placed it on a grid allowing viewers to compare drawings from different days. I have been using the data collected during the Drawing Revisited exhibition as a playground (of sorts) for new interpretations. The second slideshow includes images from a new set of drawings, all using the same program. To help myself, and others, understand the scope of the problem I created an installation for RISD’s Graphic Design MFA show in 2005. 540 large black balloons were suspended in the lobby outside the gallery. The weight of the air inside all the balloons was equivalent in weight to one day of my carbon dioxide emissions. At that time in my life, I was responsible for 62 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions every day or about two tons per year. In 2009, it was shown at the studios of WGBH in Boston as part of Boston Cyberarts Festival 2009. The Reporter can be shown either as a projection or on a display. Viewers see letters from collected words floating freely in an animated typographic cloud. At regular intervals, letters from the cloud move to become words and make original statements. During an installation, the Reporter's vocabulary is regularly updated. Its sources can be tailored to a specific location or specific topics. During the installation at WGBH, its sources included WGBH related programming such as NPR, PBS and the BBC as well as Boston area newspapers and blogs. a day’s wind data are placed from top to bottom. Marks based on wind data collected at midnight start at the top left and move down as time progresses. This method reveals more information about how wind conditions change throughout the day. Some drawings have large gaps where winds were light and areas of higher density when winds were strong. Shifts in wind direction can be seen on a drawing’s outside edge.The drawing based on October 13, 2010 data shows a significant curve as wind direction and speed change throughout the day.
