Department of Art, Appalachian State University

Department of Art Website

This design of the department's website– my second since I began working there in 2007 – started with the goals of showing how we study art & design and implementing Drupal, a content management system. I worked with a student to develop the site's information architecture and develop a design proposal for approval by our faculty and the university.

The site is organized into five sections: Apply, Study, Thrive, Connect and See. Randomly selected images from the student and faculty galleries appear on most pages with selections tailored to each page's content. The site's navigation uses a custom built system that echoes the art building’s footprint.

Each page on the site can include three features: quote, triptych of three images, and a large photo with extended caption. The galleries show a mix of images from every area or degree program and include filters for users to narrow down the selection of images.

In 2019, the site won and awarded an Award of Excellence from the University and College Designers Association (UCDA) in the In-House Digital category. It also won a Gold in the 2019 MarCom Awards.

Event Promotion

From time to time, I design promotional material for department related exhibitions, events and lectures. Each project is as an opportunity to try something new as a designe and make something in a way I haven't done so before.

Instagram Stories

After redesigning the department's website, I created an Instagram story for each of the department's degree programs using some of the images featured on the website.
